LA BORRACHITA REPORT 2
Introduction
La Borrachita is a Traditional song which was composed by ‘Tata Nacho’ in 1917. The
relevance of this song goes beyond the fact that it has over 100 years since it was composed. The
song has been changed to many renditions over those years and so it represents a window to the
past and a clear picture of the 20
th
century as well. Ixya Herrera is the most famous vocalist
known to perform this song and she sure did some justice to the song with her vocals which are
well complimented by the musical instruments (Nacho, 1932).
This analysis seeks to look into the distinctive features of the genre of La Borrachita as
well as the historical and cultural context that inspired the selection. It shall also examine the
vocal production of the performer, Ixya Herrera in terms of vowel placement, breath control as
well as the use of chest and head voice. Other than that, the lyric to the song is also analyzed to
uncover the meaning and the values that the composer sought to make known to the audience.
The language style and tone shall also be covered along with literary devices. Finally the
instrumental accompaniment will be analyzed against the vocals of Herrera to determine whether
they complement each other as it is expected.
Context of the selection
La Borrachita which was composed by Ignacio Fernandez Esperon commonly known as
‘Tata Nacho’ and performed by lxya Herrera is a traditional song and so it falls under the
traditional genre. Some of the distinctive elements in this genre include Rhythm which in this
case there is a beat, tempo and meter. There are also dynamics which are brought about by the
use of violin. As for the melody lxya is able to hit the pitch in her song. Her voice along with the
dissonance, progression, and chord create harmony. The instrumentation on the other hand helps
create the tone color of the song. The melody is smooth and easy to sing since she has the right
tone and pitch. The melody is underlined with a habanera rhythm. La Borrachita uses a 32-bar
song form which is characterized by chorus and verse. There is an introduction which leads to
the main melody in a typical AABA form. In addition to that each section is made of eight bars
and with repetition, the A section is set in a different text (Nacho, 1932).
La Borrachita was inspired by historical and cultural aspects of Mexico which was dived
into three parts: before, during and after the conquest of Spain. The Mexican music is divided
into four periods; pre-encounter era, colonial era, independence era and the 20
th
century. After
colonization, a strong impact was exerted not only in politics but also in culture and society.
Mestizaje was the most important social incident presented. This is basically a blend of
indigenous and European races (Nacho, 1932).
In 1521, the mixture of races increased and the Mestizaje result was the inevitable cultural
fusion and created a number of classes. The work of Tata Nacho belongs to the mestizo class.
Tata Nacho also used the canciones which enabled him to contribute to the ideals of hope,
stability, and love in all kinds of fashion (Nacho, 1932). Canciones dates back to the Mestizo
music which developed shortly after the Spanish colonizers conquest. Therefore cancion has
Amerindian and European mainly Spain roots as well as Nortemerican, New York. Tata Nacho
hence wrote La Borrachita after the models of the Spaniards and Italians. The Cancion is hence
