Culture and Intercultural Competence
The speaker is attempting to talk about intercultural competence, where she has the
ability to work, communicate, and function well with different people from different cultural
backgrounds. She normally faces prejudices in different states as they are undertaking their daily
living activities and points out how she is perceived in different backgrounds. She also tries to
point out the challenges that she faces because of her origin and the fear of others because of
their culture. She shows how Muslims are perceived as terrorists, yet other people from different
cultures engage in criminal activities (TEDx Talks, 2016). Even though she can work effectively
with different cultures, a few individuals have developed wrong perceptions about their culture,
hindering her emotionally.
The speaker has made me understand that, even though there is a challenge to prejudice
and negative beliefs about other cultures, one can work and communicate effectively with
different individuals from different cultures. I also learned the importance of respecting,
responding appropriately, and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds to prevent
negative perceptions. I also realized that being strong, despite the challenges and prejudices that
one faces, cannot hinder one from working with different cultures. The speaker says that she
usually faces challenges because of her descent, for instance, being mistaken for being a terrorist
and many other stereotypes (TEDx Talks, 2016).
It is true that understanding one's culture is important to understanding and appreciating
other cultures. Having a clear understanding of one's own culture helps people avoid imposing
their values on others and also helps them understand why such differences exist and their
importance. Misunderstandings can lead to various issues, particularly given that people live in a
