Is gun control an effective way to control the crime in the US?
The debate over the effectiveness of gun control as an effective way to control crime has
been ongoing for several years. Some of the gun control measures taken in the United States by
the federal and state governments include increasing taxes on firearms and background checks to
prevent the guns from reaching unauthorized persons such as mentally ill or convicts to reduce
the possibility of committing an offense. Those against the effectiveness of gun control argue
that it infringes with individual rights provided in the second amendment of the constitution, the
right to own guns for self-defense. Cases of gun violence have increased all as a result of guns
reaching the wrong people. Every time a mass shooting occurs the citizens question the
effectiveness of gun control and ask for stricter gun control laws to manage the situations. Gun
control is the most effective way to reduce crime, save lives and reduce the number of juvenile
offenders.
Gun control regulations reduce the rate of crime in the United States. The high rates of
crime in the U.S are as a result of the high number of guns available among the civilians (Kleck).
Gun control reduces crime as it prevents the guns from which high-risk individuals thus reducing

is bound to high crime rates. According to Lott, the presence or availability of loaded and
unlocked guns increased the chances of an individual engaging in crime. There has been an
increase in the number of school shootings most of which the attackers are underage who
probably stole or took guns from their homes. Gun control through ownership regulations, safety
practices and background checks reduce the presence of guns in the society thus minimizes the
chances of committing the crime, in the long run, reducing crime. Locking the guns will prevent
them from reaching a potential attacker.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, since the implementation of the Brady act,
more than one hundred and eighteen million firearm permits and transfers were subjected to
background checks. Two million of the permits and transfers were rejected. Similarly, in 2010
1.5% of ten million applications were rejected. The basis for rejection was a previous felony
conviction or indiction. By this, the gun control regulation prevented the chances of the firearms
reaching the high-risk persons such as convicts who most likely would have used the guns to re-
offend.
In addition, the Bureau of Justice Statistics presents data on non-fatal and fatal gun crime
rates since the year 1993 with respect to the impact of gun laws. The number of fatal firearm-
related crimes has reduced by 39% since 1993 and nonfatal crime rates reduced by 69%. The
number of cases reported to the police due to handguns increases between the years 2007 to
2011. The decrease in the rate of crime is an indicator that the gun laws are effective in reducing
crime rates (Kleck).
The presence of guns is likely to meet an argument or conflict turn violent. Research
indicates that in quarrels especially marital disagreements over certain aspects such as money or
