Thesis Statement
In the movie, Foreign Student, a film based on Philippe Labro's autobiography of a
similar title, international students are portrayed as open-minded to endless opportunities
whenever they pursue academic goals in new countries. Philippe the main character depicts that
an international student may exhibit much vulnerability, due to culture shock in the new
environment and a lack of enough exposure. As the film portrays, there is inner pressure to adapt
to new settings by quickly adjusting to the host country's cultures, norms and taboos as depicted
by Philippe in his experience as an international student in America for studies.
The film portrays International students as being open minded
To begin with, the main character in the movie Philippe Labro approaches the new
adventure with optimism, and an open mind gave the way he perceives interracial relationships,
new sports, education and music. In my own experience, I have found this to be a false depiction
that an international student comes into a new country with a naïve approach to the new
environment. Though the representation is possible for a few students who naively engage in the

local issues of their new countries without much research, most international students take time
to learn their unique social and academic environment before becoming involved.
Most international students are open minded to positive experiences, but negative ones
happen anyway. The film has tried to depict this aspect from an exaggerated perspective, and I
would personally take time to get up to speed with the environment, focus on my studies, and
learn the socio-cultural norms before being involved ("Foreign Student | TV Guide"). This is a
classic example of some of the positive aspects of Philippe's interaction with the local people and
a good experience as a result of his optimism and an open mind. The international student's
open-minded approach may bring about positive experiences as well as negative experiences just
as Philippe finds out from his interactions with people from all walks of life and his positive
mindset
Subject to stereotypes and vulnerabilities
The film portrayal of the aspect of social stereotypes weaknesses is still there in modern
America, though it is not as dangerous as Philippe finds it in the 50s. In my own experience, a lot
has changed, but it is still important to exercise awareness and responsibility from the personal
perspective of any issues that may cause your academic objectives to be in jeopardy. The modern
American cultural space allows diversity; however, some people do not perceive social
difference as a positive tool in society. As portrayed by the doomed love experience for Philippe
in the film, it is accurate to say that even though issues of racial prejudice still exist, though not
as bad as in the 50s and there are also social support systems that students can reach out to for
support. These systems can help in avoidance of any loopholes that may cause one to fall into
risky situations that may jeopardise the students well being.
