Introduction
Hiroshi Kashiwagi is a renowned Japanese-American playwright, poet, and actor. He is
well recognized for his contribution in writing as well as performing on stage, and he is
considered one of the earliest pioneers of the Asian American theatre. He did a massive
collection of works including plays, narrative poems, as well as other works. These plays and
works have stood out as great pieces in professional society. Hiroshi Kashiwagi works have been
performed in many theatres across the world. Kashiwagi has appeared in many films,
including the Black Rain that was directed by Scott Ridley, as well as Hito Hata, Raise the
Banner which was produced by Visual Communications.
This article analyzes the many works of this author and focuses on the element of
reality in Kashiwagi’s writings and finds a profound ambivalence directed to his real life. It notes
the intense sexual tension expressed in his life and how this surfaces in the works he did. It
discusses the sexual anxieties, including his fear of romance with his wife, as well as possible
cases of incest feelings, leaning towards his family history. The writer assumes that Kashiwagi
feared passion since he was incapable but cannot provide a basis.
The early child life of kashiwagi is the main reason that has made me chose him as the
preferred playwright for this research. Having been born in America from a Japanese parent,
kashiwagi has been able to present his real-life experiences through his plays and works. More of
these is the social aspect of life including his struggles in life as an Asian-American. Most of his
works were inspired by the experiences he went through. Even now as he delights in his old age,
we still see his life modeled into humorous works acted on stage.
