STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETICS 2
Students Participation in Athletics
The beginning of every new academic year is always characterized by numerous
activities for the students who are also participating in co-curriculum activities such as athletics.
Majority of the students both men and women will consistently compete in different sporting
fields including football, hockey, and soccer (Hewett and Myer et al, 2017). The students are
chasing their life dreams, but in many instances, many critics have sued so many colleges
arguing that the student-athletes have been exploited. The critics claim that the system is not fair.
The system where the students are both learners, and at the same time they are athletes is very
exploitative as it makes the students be employees of the colleges where they learn in instead of
only carrying their learning activities(Drafted ,2017). If these systems have to exist, then it must
be dismantled and replaced with a faulty model which will professionalize sports undertaken by
college students including athletics. Thesis; the students who are participating in athletics in
different universities and colleges should not be treated as the employees of these
institutions. The student’s should be taken as learners whose foremost objective in these
institutions is to gather knowledge and skills.
Students who participate in athletics should be salaried because they allow the students
to unionize, and hence the students are seen as employees (Maron and Shirani et al, 2015).
Different colleges, therefore, should ensure that the students succeed in both classrooms and
athletics as this helps to create a positive image for the society and the people that the students
interact within their daily lives. The students and other stakeholders should not see the students
as being exploited but should view it as young men and women who are severely and keenly
participating in both studies and athletics.
