THE SCOPE OF CLOUD COMPUTING 2
Scope of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is one of the revolutionary IT advances that has transformed how
businesses engage in IT services. According to Moghadasi, Mousavi, and Fazekas (2018), cloud
computing facilitates ‘maximum utilization of hardware and software by sharing resources
through virtualization, elasticity, flexibility, and decreasing capital and operational
expenditures.’ However, sharing IT resources introduces complexities in risk management in the
business. Since the business has limited control over the cloud, the cloud application must be
periodically audited to determine its compliance with the stipulated legal framework.
Auditing in the cloud computing environment depends on the deployment model adopted
by the business-whether private, public, community, or hybrid and the service model. However,
there are similarities between auditing on the cloud and standard computing infrastructure. In
both cases, conflict of interest lies with the auditor, and the ‘accuracy of the process hinges on
professional auditing practices and adequate technical training and proficiency of the auditor’
(Nurhajati, 2016). The deployment model of interest, in this case, is infrastructure as a service
(IaaS).
The scope of an IaaS audit is limited to five critical areas. The first area is connectivity.
Connectivity, in this context, is ‘reliable access to the internet and connectivity to associated
systems and technologies’ (Nurhajati, 2016). The objective in auditing this aspect would be to
determine the risks involved in the availability and reliability of connectivity, downtimes, and
the average speed of access to the cloud. The auditor would have to test the reliability of internet
connectivity comprehensively.
