The United States enacted policies aimed at seizing land from the natives and expand its
power throughout the world. The US government employed the military to crush the indigenous
people in the country as well as other countries that were regarded as a threat to the US global
dominance. The government seized the native land from Indians during the 1800s through wars
and policies such as the Homestead Act of 1862 (Dunbar-Ortiz, 2014). The natives were
subjected to terrible brutality by the US Army that was deployed to seize land occupied by
indigenous people. The government also implemented policies to assimilate the natives and
minorities in the US. The US government also initiated numerous military interventions in such
as the Philippines, Mexico, and Cuba among others to topple regimes that were unfriendly to the
US. The US also established several colonies such as Alaska, Guam, and Puerto Rico where it
established military bases. The US Expanded its influence throughout the world by expanding
its naval capabilities. The section that stood out most is how the US government subjected the
natives to great suffering by confiscating their land, livestock, and burning shelters. The natives
discriminated, oppressed, and neglected to the extent accessing basic services proved a huge
task. The chapter is connected to the course materials on issues such as the displacement of the
natives, racism, and unfavorable government policies that unfairly targeted the indigenous
people.
