CHALLENGES AFTER INDEPENDENCE 2
Introduction
The United States became independent from Great Britain in the 18
th
century in 1976. This
followed a war with Great Britain to gain its independence. What followed were numerous
challenges as the new nation struggled with putting systems in place. The challenges ranged from
economic, constitutional and legal matters, security issues, to socio-political matters (Zinn, 2015).
Just like any other newly born nation, these challenges took time and years of concerted efforts to
overcome. It took the wisdom and leadership of the first leaders to guide the country forward.
Challenges Faced after Independence.
The immediate challenges after independence included the urgency to build a stable and
working economy. Creation of a stable political system in the country and preservation of the
national independence were also immediate issues to be dealt with. Consolidation of public support
from citizens of the new nation was very crucial (Wilson, 2017). Foreign policy and economic
problems had to be overcome. After the revolutionary war, the new country was left with huge
debts which meant that any economic development would be slow.
Another challenge was that Great Britain still held some parts of the United States even
after independence. Areas like Old Northwest were still controlled by Britain hence threat to
national security. Additionally, Spain refused to recognize some boundaries in the southern and
western parts of the nation. Enactment of the constitution and the election of first leaders was not
easy. How to raise revenue for use by the government was a major challenge. Creation of the courts
and justice system and the Bill of Rights were some of the first actions the government took in
order to effectively deal with the challenges (Zinn, 2015). They were meant to gain popular support
from the people.
