Describe how slavery developed and entrenched itself in the British North American
colonies.
Slavery can be traced back in 1619 when the first Africans were brought in British North
America as captives. They were pushed to work with other indentured servants, although it was
not clear whether they were slaves or not, this was the beginning of slavery in British North
America. The status of African laborers was not clear between 1619 and 1640 due to the fact that
there were no laws which controlled them. (Faragher et al. 2011). The increase in African-
American population also made it easy for the colonists to engage in more farming. A region like
Chesapeake where tobacco farming was dominant experience high number of slaves. In most
cases, the slaves stayed close to the owner which meant they were treated fairly. In other places
like Georgia and South Carolina, rice and indigo plantations were common. Due to the large
farms, a large number of slaves was required which meant that the slaves had more freedom as
they lived in servant quarters (Faragher et al. 2011).
The increase in the number of slave population meant that the farm owner had more source of
free labor. By 1770, the number of slaves had grown to 460, 000 which was one-fifth of the total
population. Due to the suppression they faced, slaves started to resist slavery by forming
rebellions against their masters. One of the most notable rebellion was the Stono Rebellion

which took place in South Carolina in September 1739. The rebellion was organized by an
African named Cato who was a Catholic from the kingdom of Kongo. Most of those who
resisted were Africans who did not have family in the new land. African-Americans were
reluctant to fight as they had children and other family members who always suffered when they
turned against their masters (Faragher et al. 2011). Over time, blacks engaged their masters in
numerous battles as they tried to seek their own freedom. Such fight resulted to deaths,
especially for the blacks.
How racial ideologies developed
Between, 1640 and 1680, the ideology of racial slavery had developed were people of African
descent were perceived to be inferior. By that time, there was a close connection between slavery
and the African or African Americans. Most slave owners felt that black people were meant to
serve their white masters and there was no time they were supposed to be inferior (Faragher et al.
2011). The white colonists felt that even the poor whites and the indentured servants were better
than the blacks. This led to more blacks working as slaves. Laws were passed making it hard for
the blacks to get freedom. These laws bound a black people to slavery as it was hard to escape,
the children were also bound by these laws.
