Relationship between Economic Growth and Poverty Levels in West Africa
In West Africa, one of the major incentives is to overcome poverty through development
programs. The initiative has started to grab hold in several West Africa countries although at a
very slow pace. Research reports have indicated that poverty in all regions of the world inclusive
of West Africa realized significant reduction in the period between 2005 and 2010. The number
of individuals in West Africa living below the poverty line decrease from a high seventy percent
to a low of forty percent, between 1990 and 2008. This is the only documented case of reversal
long-term changes in poverty trend. Africa as a whole observed the highest decline in poverty
levels across the eighteen year time interval. There are numerous factors that have favored the
decline poverty; the major factor is sustainable economic growth.
West Africa has sustained quality levels of economic development averaging more than
five percent of annual GDP growth over the period 2001-2010. Moreover, throughout this time
interval, West Africa realized an average population growth of approximately three percent
which played a significant role in average economic growth. Hence, the sustained economic
growth observed by most West Africa countries across the past decade has contributed towards
the eradication of poverty. Other decisive factors have been the collection of key structural
reviews, promoting and prioritizing education and quality health, development in the private
sector and the countries’ infrastructure, and the realization of international aid. These factors
have increased the permeability of social services in most West African Countries.
The international community in association with key development financial institutions is
playing an indispensable role in the reduction of poverty in West African Countries. For instance,
