Lone Genius vs Police Procedural
Fictional and non-fictional works of art have a direct connection with the real society.
Notably, literature can be viewed as a person’s reflection of how the society looks like currently
and how he/she would like it to be. The book, Cotton Comes to Harlem and the TV series
namely The Bletchley Circle and The Wire that support the use of police procedural in handling
crime at the expense of lone genius support the proposition.
According to Himes, police procedural should be adopted in handling crime as it
encourages the use of evidence as an approach to determining the real culprit (Himes 108). Use
of evidence translates to a more effective form justice administration and a consequential
stabilization of the society. He supports use of police procedural, as there are high chances of
proper investigation and collection of evidence among the police (Chaddha and Williams).
Notably, such a condition is attributed to the presence of properly enacted rules in collection of
evidence and it is not easy to break them owing to the large numbers of officers involved in a
case. Thus, police procedural allows for improved chances in administration of justice compared
to lone geniuses. Himes suggest that lone geniuses such as detectives have chances to alter
evidence and align it with what he/she deems fit.

In addition, The Bletchley Circle argues that police procedural mandates application of
logic and reason in handling criminal cases. As thus, police officers must follow some logical
steps in order to determine the guilt status of the suspect. Such a practice ensures that justice is
served in accordance objectively and accordance to the relevant law. By contrast, Johnson and
Patten recognize that lone detectives often apply subjectivity as they apply their work. For
example, Himes illustrates a situation where detective are forego the provisions of the law and
democratize their investigative methods. As Himes argues, most of the detectives disregard the
rules and poses a threat to the validity of law (Himes 98). The same condition is reflected in
Trouble is my Business, where detectives are thought to be unfit for the work because they make
lots of mistakes as they pursue culprits. Such a condition not only invalidates their ability to
handle crime, but it also exposes them to inherent dangers. Consequently, there is a major barrier
to administration of justice (Raymond 1019).
However, the police procedural system is challenged by various weaknesses present in
the justice system and the society itself (Dove 80). For example, it is evident that the police
might present logically established evidence to demonstrate the guilt of the criminal without
convincing the judge as to the guilt to the person. Undoubtedly, such a condition de-motivates
the police force and damages its reputation with the societal members. For example, The Wire
argues that police officers aim at helping the entire community from harmful individuals but the
community seems to ignore this gesture. Instead, the public refuses to collaborate with police in
providing information and evidence pertaining to the activities of various culprits. To this effect,
the police create secret informant groups in order to gain information that will help them in
keeping criminals in control.
