Question 2.
Water is important to living systems because:
a. Water is essential in plant cells to make them turgid by generating hydrostatic
pressure hence making the plants erect.
b. Water is an essential part of the cell cytoplasm where various biochemical
reactions which are essential in various animal processes such as glycolysis take
place.
c. Water is essential for cooling of the body when the temperature rises. This is
evidenced by sweating when the atmospheric temperature rises above the body
temperature. The major component of sweat is water.
d. Water facilitates the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the
tissues respectively hence helping in respiration.
e. Water is a major component of blood in animals which facilitates the transport of
oxygen and nutrients to the cells, tissues and organs and removal of waste
products from the cells, tissues and organs.
f. The cartilage found in the joints and the synovial fluids have their major
component being water hence facilitating the lubrication of joints.
g. Water acts as a solvent of various ions such as Na
+
, Cl
-
, K
+
etc. these ions are
important in the various processes of living organisms.
