Introduction
By definition, consumerism is the protection or the promotion of the interests of the
consumers of given services or products. According to Beaulieu (2017), the healthcare industry
in the United States has witnessed numerous consumerism. One of the drivers of this phenomena
is the increased adoption of employer’s health benefit plan which has put the economic
purchasing power and decision-making in the hands of the plan participants. Other than this,
existing business models have come under immense pressure to come up with new and
innovative sources of value and to make health care less complicated and to improve patient
outcomes. As such, consumerisms in healthcare is geared towards enabling patients to become
more involved in making decisions related to the healthcare services they receive. The last five
years has seen patients increasingly take active roles in their care experience which has seen
them become more empowered to decide on available healthcare alternatives. Beaulieu (2017)
also notes that the desire to promote patient satisfaction has seen healthcare facilities allow
patients to take part in the healthcare delivery system actively. Bearder, Carter, and Harve (2014)
note that consumerism in healthcare is expected to continue rising, especially with the
introduction of telehealth services, the desire to maximize patient satisfaction and to offer
patient-centered services.
Methodology
As the healthcare service delivery has advanced, so has the patient evolved. Beaulieu
(2017) notes that the introduction of technology which disrupts how services are offered,
regulatory changes, and individual customer experiences have had a significant impact on the
expectations and preferences of healthcare services consumers. While regulatory and payment
changes have had a tremendous impact on reforms currently experienced in healthcare, so have
