THE IMPACT OF INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS ON EXPATRIATE FAMILIES 2
Question 2
Reflecting on Lisa’s dual-career trailing spouse journey, how would you have approached
the situation differently?
Introduction
An expatriate refers to a person permanently or temporarily residing is another country
that is different from their citizenship. This term is often used to refer to skilled and/or
professional workers who are sent abroad by their corporations. Multinational companies that
operate in other foreign markets often use skilled employees from other countries. Although
expatriates can easily move from one country to another, the most challenging issue, in this case,
is the aspect of their families. Expatriate families are basically families that move from one place
or country to another. Such families often face challenges relating to adjustment in a foreign
country.
This case addresses the expatriate life of the MacDougall’s, Lachlan and Lisa. Lachlan
has been moving from one region/country to another as an expatriate and his family, Lisa and the
two kids have been tagged along. Lisa views herself as a trailing spouse because she has been
following her husband from one region to another because of his work assignments. The
MacDougall’s have moved in three different regions. The first move was from Sydney there
home to Chicago, the second move was from Chicago to Philadelphia, the third move was from
Philadelphia to Singapore, and lastly they are contemplating to moving to China, Shanghai
(Dowling, 2008).
