Sexual cycle is the series of physical and emotional phases that that takes place when an
individual is aroused or takes part in sexually arousing activities. The sexual amusement may not
only be restricted to penile-vaginal intercourse, but the cycle can as well be complete when an
individual masturbates, manually stimulate his or her partner, activities like oral sex and sexual
fantasy (Sexinfo, 2014). It is important to note that it may be difficult to avoid these sexual
stages and when one gets keen to note the stages during sexual activity, he or she may get
distracted. Even though individuals are different, sexual stages are somewhat predictable among
people individuals. This paper is, therefore, going to analyze sexual response stages according to
Masters and Johnson human sexual response cycle and Kaplan three stages of sexual response by
drawing similarities and differences within the stages of sexual response (Sexinfo, 2014).
Helen Singer Kaplan, a psychologist developed a three-stage model of sexual arousal
which encompasses of desire, excitement, and orgasm stages (Barnet, 2011). Compared to
Masters and Johnson, she gave much attention to the desired stage, which is unique in reference
to the sexual response cycle. Kaplan explains that any sexual problems can be placed in any of
her stages. She feels that desire is the initiator of sexual activity and without desire one may not
be able to have the other stages of sexual response. She, however, goes ahead to state that
however much the desired stage is important, a good percentage of women do not experience the
stage. Her model is inconsistent due to the fact that sexual relations don't have to have desire
associated with sexual behaviors. This typically mean that one can do sex without necessarily

having the sexual desire. She still however believed that it is an important stage that leads to
sexual excitement and orgasm stages (Barnet, 2011). The second stage concentrates on the
excitement. This stage is what Masters and Johnson focus into much. This is the phase where
sexual arousal begins for both Kaplan and Masters and Johnson theories.
Arguably, Masters and Johnson's four-phase model is comparable but very distinct from
Kaplan. The key similarities presented by the two models are that each researched the kind of
human sexual response; they as well researched about sexual disorders, together with treatment
options for these conditions. Masters and Johnson present a four-phase theory that consists of
excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. They have come up with an important part
associated with men and sexual response, which is refractory period. This means that men can
recover from the incapability to orgasm. Masters and Johnson apply more scientific studies, for
example, Functional Magnet Resonance Imaging Technology which can study sexual response.
The excitement stage focuses on how men and women physically respond. It is, however, a fact
that people do not experience similar sexual excitement, the next stage is the plateau phase,
which is marked by minimum changes in behavior but indicated as a continuation of sexual
arousal until one reaches orgasm. The last stage according to Masters and Johnson is a
resolution which is majorly concerned or focuses on orgasm. The last stage is a resolution. This
is all about the orgasm. Orgasms can occur due to oral sex, masturbation, intercourse, sex toys
and other stimulants.
