1st question: Why do you think that Nzinga Mbema (Afonso) Continued to deal with
Portugal after it became apparent that the result would be more indigenous people being
kidnapped and traded into slavery?
I think Nzinga Mbema continued to deal with Portugal for two reasons. The first reason came
from a place of concern for his people; he thought that his people could benefit more from the
Portuguese. Afonso, in his letter, writes that his people are in need of doctors and that the king
should be kind enough to send them. Also, Afonso knows that his constituents need a priest, a
teacher, wine and flour. He knows the benefits his people will achieve if these requirements are
granted. As a result, he continues to deal with the Portuguese as a desperate attempt.
I also think Afonso continued to deal with the Portuguese for selfish reasons. First, he had
thought that dealing with the Portuguese would assure him of a prosperous and powerful state
with Portuguese help. I believe he tolerated the visitors hoping that they would help him achieve
that desire. Besides, Afonso may have admired the ways of the Portuguese and may have given
them too much respect because of all the riches and sophistication. Afonso had been baptized,
used Portuguese in business and imitated the etiquette of the Portuguese royalty. I think he had
an admiration for the visitors to the point he placed them above his own people. However, I do
think his actions were motivated by both concerns for his people and selfishness.
2. Who do you blame the detrimental effects of slavery on? The obvious answer would be
Europeans or those that initiated the idea, however, could you see how the blame could also
be put on African elitists? Or others who greatly benefited from slave trade? Why or why
not?
