Reflection: School Board Meeting
Introduction
The School Board meets periodically to discuss the issues that challenge the schools in
Fairfax County. The resolutions that are made in these meetings inform the policy directions that
are adopted by the various schools. I attended one such meeting on Thursday the 23rd February
2017. There were various items on the agenda. The first agenda that was up for discussion is the
collaboration between schools and the communities that they are based. The second plan
revolves around how the school responds to the interests and needs of the community. Thirdly,
the meeting broached the subject of the ways in which the educational leaders showed their
ability to mobilize the resources of the community to benefit the students.
Collaboration between the School and the Community
The first comments on the agenda were an admission by everyone who was present at
the meeting that education is a collective effort. Schools are just facilitators of the curricula that
are set in terms of policy. It is the duty of the school personnel to give the students the best form
of education with the available resources. It was seen that schools use dedicated months or weeks
to emphasize certain skills that are not strictly within the curriculum. For instance, ‘Read Across
America Day’ was mooted as a means of inculcating a reading culture in young people all across
America. Also, National Foreign Language Week would be used to highlight the value of
learning a global language. The week was tailored `to teach children of their place in an
increasingly globalized world.
In order to achieve the best learning outcomes, it was agreed that the community ought to
be involved with the learning process as well. Activities that integrate the values taught in school
with community initiatives were acknowledged to be the best policy going forward. As a matter
