A Response to Lawrence Lessing’s talk
Lawrence Lessing, in his talk, acknowledges that corruption exists in politics, including
American politics. Corruption is caused by the congressional candidates to be funded by its
citizens. Lawrence argues that American citizens fund and vote for their leaders despite taking a
more significant role in voting. According to Lessing’s talk, election funders have a vital role to
play in electing their leaders. The citizens willingly fund their general elections because of
democracy (Lessing) which raises the issue of whether it is democratic to let citizens fund and
encourage dependence on congressional candidates. The question of candidates wishing to work
in government yet depending on the public to fund them to fulfill their ambitions can be viewed
as corruption.
The candidates intending to take positions in the government should ensure they have
enough personal funds to support Americans. It is not fair that in order for citizens to elect noble
leaders to help distribute public resources, they should fund him or them to get a position in the
government. There have been challenges in leaders not being transparent concerning how
government resources, mostly money meant to help citizens, has been distributed in various states
and how it has been utilized. Leaders who ask citizens to help them by voting for them to make
society a better place are the same people who misuse government resources for personal gain.

the citizens wonder if they chose the right people to help make life easier. Instead of helping the
people who chose them, some leaders strive in fulfilling their ambitions and realize their dreams
only to ask for votes again in the next general elections. Corrupt leadership in America discourages
people from trusting the government for anything, including the most crucial requirements like
security. People are forced to engage in dangerous behaviors like buying unlicensed guns for
security instead of depending on their leaders to provide proper security.
