Women Literature
There are similarities and differences in the works of Gertrude Stein (Gentile Lena) and
Susan Glaspell (Trifles). The similarities in the both stories are that the women are discriminated
by men and are not given a chance to make their own decisions. For example, in the story the
Gentile Lena, Lena’s changing life decisions were made by her relatives. For example, she was
forced to work as a maid and later the family made her to get married to Herman Kreder.
Similarly, in the play (Trifle), the men who were investigating the murder of Mr. Wright
criticized the woman for worrying about the trifle. Henderson does not allow Mrs. Hale to do
investigation with the men but he ordered the woman to collect the things for Mrs. Wright in the
kitchen. The difference in the text is that in The Gentile Lena, there is no investigation of murder
but in Trifles, the investigation about the murder of Mr. Wright is done.
The works of the two writers are related to modernism. For example, in Gertrude’s work,
it shows how the women were mistreated in the past. For example, they were forced to get
married to people they don’t like. This is also seen in modern societies where the plight of
women is not considered. Also in Trifles, the case of murder is happening in modern society
where women kill their husband. In both texts, the themes explored by writers are about the
plight of Women. This theme is significant since it shows how the men have been dominating
women for long time. Women are seen to be weak and therefore they don’t have to make
decisions in the society. These works are very important for the progress of women. For
example, when Mrs. Wright kills her husband, it shows that the women are tired to be slaves of
men in the society (Institution, 2016).
African Americans have gone through a very tuff time and they have applied various
techniques to survive and overcome them. This has led different authors and poets such as
