TIM COOK 2
Essay about Tim Cook, Apple Inc.
Background: Tim Cook
Timothy Donald Cook is the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple, Inc. Tim
joined the company in 1998 in the capacity of senior Vice President (VP), worldwide operations
and later advanced to Executive VP of worldwide sales and operations. Tim graduated from
Auburn University with a degree in industrial engineering and later earned a Master’s degree
from Duke University (Tim Cook Stories, 2017). Prior to joining Apple Inc, Tim worked for
IBM (1982-1994) and Compaq (1994-1998). Tim took over the helm in August 2011, when his
predecessor (Steve Jobs) stepped down owing to health complications. Jobs passed on less than
two months later. During their tenure as close collaborators, the duo saved Apple from drowning
after its annual revenue plummeted from $11 billion in 1995 to $6 billion in 1998. This
remarkable feat put Apple back on track with annual revenues of an upwards of $100 billion. In
2012, Time Magazine named him among 100 Most Influential People in the World. He is the
first CEO of a Fortune 500 Company to publicly identify as gay.
Success Achieved

into decline and doubted the new CEO’s leadership tenacity. Other critics question if Tim can
deliver the same kind of technological breakthroughs as Jobs. Fortunately, Tim has delivered
exceptional performance for more than five consecutive years as evidenced by his leadership of
tech powerhouse that boasts of the world's largest market capitalization (more than $610 billion
as of December 2016). Apple is also lauded as the most profitable business in America, having
sold its billionth iPhone (Apple Staff, 2016) just last year. Ben Wood of CCS Insight surmised
