Conic Sections
A good example of a conic section in my community is the Washington D.C Dulles
Airport. The airport was designed in the shape of hyperbolic parabolic. It consists of hyperbola
and parabola shapes. Dulles’s Airport hyperbolic parabolic consists of a three-dimensional curve
whose one cross-section is hyperbola while the other is a parabola ("Applications of Conics in
Real Life | Conic Sections", 2021). I think it is important to know the conic section because they
are applicable in real-life situations like statues, buildings, and bridges. Understanding conic
sections are crucial in describing moons, the orbit of planets, and satellites that are found in our
universe. Satellites make use of hyperbolic functions. Before launching a satellite to space, the
scientist must use hyperbolic equations to determine its path. Conic sections comprise
fundamental components of architecture and they are incorporated in many buildings due to their
designs. Conic sections are important to architects because of the numerous benefits they offer
such as simple aesthetics and structural stability. Knowing conic sections is important because it
will help get a clear picture of where mathematic meet the real world. It will help me establish
the link between mathematics and real objects.
Finally, it is important to know how to apply conic sections because we use them in daily
activities such as cutting a cucumber, sausage, or a carrot at a particular angle to produce an
elliptical slice. The ellipse shape produced in such activities gives food an elegant presentation.
Hyperbolic functions are also used in radio systems. Engineers and scientists use hyperbolas to
optimize radio signal coverage from a station. The knowledge of the conic section will also help
me understand the design of monitors and lenses. With this knowledge, I can design new or
improve the existing objects that use hyperbolas such as telescopes, microscopes, and
televisions.
