Due to the advancements in social media sites and networking, students are utilizing such
platforms at an increase pace. Social media has become the primary way in which students
communicate with others on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and so forth. Such
transformational connections allow students to remain in contact with their friends and families
while being able to set and make plans, study together in the online environment, as well as
portraying an easier method of allowing students to present themselves to the online world. For
students utilizing social media sites, it can bring positive aspects to them as well as negative.
There are multiple tasks for adolescence when it pertains to the online environment and social
media platforms (Flad, 2010).
Those tacks are allowing students to stand out while developing their own identities, as
well as diverging goals and interplay to develop personal ties with others. When trying to reduce
the utilization of media sites among students, it can become quite difficult because they have
built their socialization formations through such platforms. Taking away or reducing media use
will create negative aspects towards the students because this is the easiest way they have found
to communicate with their friends and others in a fast manner (Flad, 2010). Social media can
sometimes become addicting for the user and can take away from their learning abilities because
they are quick at wanting to continuously be on the media sites as opposed to studying or
accomplishing their learning materials.
