III. Islam

normative example (called the sunnah, composed of accounts called hadith) of Muhammad (c.

2. It is the world's second-largest religion and the fastest-growing major religion in the world, with over
1.7 billion followers or 23% of the global population, known as Muslims.
3. Muslims also believe that Islam is the original, complete and universal version of a primordial faith

and Jesus.
4. Muslims consider Muhammad to be the last prophet of God.
5. Religious concepts and practices include the five pillars of Islam, which are obligatory acts of
worship, and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society,
from banking and welfare to the status of women and the environment.
IV. Atheism
1. Atheism is, in the broadest sense, the absence of belief in the existence of deities.
2. With the spread of freethought, skeptical inquiry, and subsequent increase in criticism of religion,
application of the term narrowed in scope.
3. Rationales for not believing in deities include arguments that there is a lack of empirical
evidence, the problem of evil; the argument from inconsistent revelations, the rejection of concepts
that cannot be falsified, and the argument from nonbelief.
