Question 1 Why is HCI an interdisciplinary design science? (10 points)
HCI also known as human computer interaction is a booming area of research. It is an integrated design
science since it requires the interaction of all types of engineering. Be it computer engineering, electrical,
embedded system or communication engineering.
There is no brought together idea of a HCI. In the 1980s, the intellectual science side of HCI was here and
there diverged from the product instruments and UI side of HCI. The scene of center HCI ideas and
aptitudes is much more separated and complex at this point. HCI scholarly projects prepare a wide range
of sorts of experts: client encounter architects, collaboration planners, UI fashioners, application creators,
ease of use specialists, UI engineers, application designers, specialized communicators/online data
originators, and that's only the tip of the iceberg. What's more, to be sure, a considerable lot of the sub-
groups of HCI are themselves very different. For instance, pervasive registering is subarea of HCI, however
it is likewise a superordinate region incorporating a few discernable subareas, for instance versatile
figuring, geo-spatial data frameworks, in-vehicle frameworks, group informatics, conveyed frameworks,
handhelds, wearable gadgets, encompassing insight, sensor arranges, and concentrated perspectives of
ease of use assessment, programming devices and methods, and application foundations. The
relationship between pervasive processing and HCI is paradigmatic: HCI is the name for a group of groups.
All these instances show that it is not a one-man work while working on HCI.
Question 2 Access the paper Design Thinking, Brown, Tim tbrown@ideo.com, Harvard Business
Review. Jun 2008, Vol. 86 Issue 6, p84-92. How are the processes at IDEO the same/different than those
discussed in the introduction of our book? (30 points)
Basically this referred article outlined how the positive impact of one thinking as a designer, that
thinking as a design can greatly impact the way product are made. IDEO involved several processes
that may be similar or different from what the discussion had earlier introduced such include the
collaboration between the employees who are the greatest users of the system and the firm. Other
processes involve having a Close observation to the actual changes that are required. In the IDEO the
creative culture is very high and thus very valuable to any of its employee.
The processes are similar in the sense that the ideas of IDEO makes one to think out of the box. As one of
the examples, it shows how IDEO changed the whole idea of bicycling and reconnected the American
consumers to re-experience it. This is similar to the introduction of the book.
