EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE 2
Focus of the Article
The paper by Eizenberg (2010) reports on the relationship that exists between the
professional and personal factors of nurses and that of evidence-based practice in nursing.
There is a shift in the nursing paradigm from using traditional methods to that of applying the
evidence-based practice. The paper thus assesses a case study of 243 nurses in northern Israel
and examines the association between evidence-based nursing and background variables. It is
thus aiming at assessing the use of evidence-based practice among nurses in different
education levels, access to resources in the nursing practice, and skills in research. Generally,
those found to be implementing it were the ones with the degree (Eizenberg, 2010). The main
factors stated to affect implementation was professional knowledge sourced from literature,
that of the systems procedure, and that from experience. The main questions addressed was
the relation of EBNP to gender, age, role, seniority, workplace, academic education, access to
research resources and the factors that predict its implementation.
Key Points in the Article
The paper presents the stages involved in the evidence-based nursing practice which
are mainly the;
1. Question formulation to come up with a suitable answer;
2. Gathering of relevant information through systematic search of clinical guidelines or
the literature;
3. Critical evaluation of the evidence relevance, validity, and feasibility;
4. Integration of proof researched with the patients’ clinical experience, preferences, and
values;
5. Assessment of the outcomes from the treatment.
It points out that EBNP is important as it promotes access to information on effective
treatment by the nurse. It also enables pacing up with the technology for effective service
