COMMUNICATION OF RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE FINDINGS
Research and EBP projects can be communicated in many ways. Which method do you think is
most effective to get to the staff nurse level? To the advanced practice nurses? How will you
ensure that all appropriate audiences receive your information?
Nursing research has become an effective method for validating and refining the existing
knowledge while generating new data that positively influences the nursing practice (Keele, 48).
This newly acquired knowledge is later used in Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to guide clinical
decision-making processes and improve the nursing practice as well (Keele, 48). For these
findings to be effectively adopted, there is a need to inform all interested parties. This
information can be communicated through numerous methods (Keele, 52). However, for a
particular method to be effective, it must be used for a targeted audience. This paper will analyze
the most efficient way of communicating research and EBP findings to staff nurses, advanced
practice nurses, and other audiences.
When disseminating information to the staff nurses panel presentations and roundtable
discussions would be very effective. These methods convey colleagues from various clinical
settings allowing them to discuss and share information on evidence-based topics (Betz et al.,

355). The moderator is tasked with asking questions and eliciting ideas and opinions from the
audience (Betz et al., 356). These methods give nurses an opportunity to share their experiences
and learn how certain information may be used within their practices (Betz et al., 357).
When disseminating information to advance practice nurses, the use of dissertations and journal
articles would prove to be most effective. With the advent of the internet, the concept of journal
clubs has considerably evolved (Betz et al., 369). Currently, numerous online journals exist
allowing nursing professionals to exchange scholarly materials. Since journal clubs are organized
and led by advanced-level professionals who have an in-depth analysis of research designs,
methods, and statistics, advanced practice nurses may use this platform as a means of
disseminating information to their colleagues (Betz et al., 369).
Lastly, when sharing information with other stakeholders and the public, the use of posters would
be the most efficient method to adopt. According to Forsyth et al. (15), posters are used to share
information to a variety of people especially in educating the public about EBP efforts. They
broadly disseminate information in a concise way (Forsyth et al., 15). Additionally, posters
provide an avenue to keep communication flowing to the interested parties since they can also be
distributed electronically to list servers or on websites directed at targeted audiences (Forsyth et
al., 15).
In summary, before choosing a method of disseminating information, it is imperative to consider
the type of audience and any other relevant information that might aid in selecting an appropriate
method. Every technique selected must be targeted to ensure that it achieves positive outcomes.
