Self-esteem is an aspect that is used to describe the self-worth of an individual depending on
one’s confidence in them (Plummer and Harper, 2014). A person self-esteem affects how one
relates to others at work, home or any other place in life. This is because the self-confidence of
an individual allows him or her to communicate with others in the open effectively. However a
person with a low self-esteem tends to disconnect from the outside world and avoid contact with
others. One of the most influential factors that affects ones self esteem is the issue of
unemployment. Individuals who are unemployed in society tend to have a low self-esteem
whereas those who are employed have a higher confidence in themselves.
Unemployment is state when an individual losses a job position in a working
environment or when an individuals fails to secure a working position in an organization. The
state of unemployment leads to an individual believing that they lack the required competitive
skills to work alongside others (Anderson, Goodman, Schlossberg and Goodman, 2011).
Moreover unemployment to individuals also implies that they only have inadequate
qualifications. This conclusion tends to make most of the individuals blame themselves for their
lack of job opportunities. Therefore most of the times they do not appreciate themselves on only
find themselves not worthy in society. As such unemployment causes the self-esteem of
individuals to diminish.
Secondly unemployment not only makes an individual place the blame on them but also
makes those close to the individual place the blame on them for their state. Some people believe
that an individuals lack of opportunity in job position is mostly due to their lack of ability to
offer quality and reliable skills at work (Antoniou and Cooper, 2011). Therefore if one does not
receive support from friends and others in society they end up blaming themselves as well. Thus
increased blame from society and self-blame due to unemployment lowers the self-esteem of an
