ROLE DILEMMA 2
Role Dilemma
The tasks that police undertake as well as how they undertake those tasks it is one of the
most significant in determining the status of police-community relations. Analyzing the role of
dilemma in law enforcement helps us have a clear understanding of the relationship between the
police and the community which they serve. The law that governs the community usually gives
the police the authority and on the other hand the community offers police the power to carry out
social control. In the practical application of the authority, a dilemma exists on how to exercise
authority and power. Generally, the police work is to prevent crime as well as protecting the
society. This is achieved by police major role in maintaining order and enforces the laws of the
community. On the other hand, the police are mandated to provide social service to the
community (Skogan, 2006). The specific role of law enforcement is extremely debated and
hence the role dilemma exists.
In an example, politics usually play a major role in policing. The law enforcement
agencies such as police have their own goals and objectives for policing while on the other hand,
the government has its own agendas and means. The law enforcers ought to abide by the
commands from the government officials. Law enforcement on life crimes such as public
intoxication, and loitering makes the community to see these policies as discriminatory. This
makes the police to be treated as enemies in the community. In contrast, instead of police being a
positive influence, they turn to have a negative influence. This in itself creates a dilemma. The
major question to solve this is what the police should do and how they do it.
