Question one: Why are counselling theories important to professional counselors?
According to Sue (2012), the theories provide the counselors with a good foundation.
The theories give the counsellor a framework they can use when exploring the clients’
problems and the counselling process. It gives them a framework for total consistency and
integrity between understanding and interpretation. Theory helps the professional counsellors
to focus only on the relevant information. The theories also help in the evaluation of both the
old and the new approaches of the counselling process. They also help the counselors with
the operational guidelines.
Question two: What characteristics must an effective counselor possess?
A counselor must possess a number of effective and very important attributes. The
counselors should have empathy because they always help people during their most stressful
and difficult times in their lives and they should be able to understand and share the feelings
of others. They should also be non-judgmental because they hear a lot of private information
and access dark secrets from a person’s past life. A counselor should be compassionate to the
clients’ problems to show how they truly care about them (Truax & Carkhuf, 2007).
Question three: How has psychoanalytic theory influenced professional counseling
today?
According to Ivey et al., (2011), the psychoanalytic theory explores and explains how
unconscious mind influences the behaviour and thoughts with an aim of offering an insight to
the person seeking the counseling therapy. This theory also tends to look at the childhood
experiences to evaluate the events that might have affected the individual life or can have
potentially contributed to the current concerns. Psychoanalytic theory has helped in
