Characteristics of Different Health Care Organizations
Various health care organizations have specific characteristics, which influence their
patients, nurses and other parties involved in the course of treatment. Factors such as size,
location, specialization, commitments to patient care, teaching, and research play a significant
role in impacting those parties. As a nurse leader, it is important to have a careful look at these
aspects and how they relate to strategic planning and sustainability, before joining an
organization (Crowell, 2016). Some organizations such as large hospitals provide a wide range
of healthcare and other services such as teaching of health practitioners. Other medium sized
hospitals are usually specialized and only provide a narrow range of healthcare services. In terms
of specialty, some organizations may be specialized to provide only one type of service such
rehabilitation centers or ambulatory healthcare organizations, while there are other medical
group practices and physicians might provide many services, rather than focusing on a single
specialty. Most medical group organizations offer inpatient and outpatient services.
Some organizations provide homecare nursing, and such are meant to extend their
services to people needing care for an extended period of time, such as the elderly. Other
organizations just provide indirect services that affect people’s health, such as the American
cancer society, which funds research and develop educational programs to reach out to people
who need such services. Also, there are pharmaceutical organizations which distribute their
supplies such as drugs and equipment to health care centers. Furthermore, other organizations
provide health insurance services. Thus, there exists no boundary between health organizations
and the rest of the economy, because health overlaps with other activities as well, (Taylor, 2011).
