MANAGEMENT THEORIES AND STYLES 2
Introduction
In order for the company to achieve its objectives, its leadership is paramount. The
management of the company must embrace effective and efficient leadership styles and theories
which applies to the particular industry the company operates. One of the leadership theories
used in management is behavioral theory of leadership. The theory outlines that leadership skills
are developed over time and not that one is born with the skills. Through this argument, the
theory gives room for leadership training where management teams are trained on best
management skills in order to lead their teams (Conger, and Kanungo, 2005). The theory
describes leadership using the behaviors of a particular leader whereby leadership is as a result of
one’s actions and not traits. For this leadership behavior to function in a particular organization,
emphasis must be made on the behaviors of the leaders and not merely their traits. Behavioral
theory outlines that the behaviors of a person defines whether one is a leader or a non-leader.
The patterns of activities of people defines the potential of leadership in them. This paper
therefore, seeks to analyze the leadership of two different American corporations in order to
evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral theory.
