Gone With the Wind
“Gone with the windis a classic war drama film that was first released in 1940 in the
United States. The directors of the movie were Victor Fleming, George Cukor and Sam Wood.
The producer was David O. Selznick in conjunction with the Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer and
Selznick international pictures production companies(Fleming, Cukor and Wood). The main
characters of the movie are Scarlett O’Hara, Rhett Butler, Melanie Hamilton and Ashley Wilkes.
The film maker’s message was to show the extent to which the society is immoral and lack of
respect for each other regardless of who they are. Betrayal is depicted in the film where Scarlett
shamelessly expresses her feeling to Ashley knowing that he was to marry her cousin Melanie.
Jealousy is also evident and Scarlett cannot bear the thought of losing Ashley despite the fact that
she had many admirers and he had rejected her.
The story in the film begins where a young lady named Scarlett is bounded by lovers who
are Ashley Wilkes and Rhett Butler. She is crushed though to find out that one of heradmirers
Ashley Wilkes is marrying her cousin Melanie Hamilton and she becomes very jealous(Fleming,
Cukor and Wood). Even though she still has Rhett Butler as her admirer, she is obsessed with
Ashely and she even confesses her love to him. Scarlett is heartbroken when Ashley rejects her
and she is as well angry with Rhett when he admits that he had been listening to their

conversation. She ends up getting married to a Charles Hamilton a day after Ashley and Melanie
join in matrimony. Unfortunately her husband later dies in battle a few days after they wed.
Scarlett decides to go stay with her aunt and cousin Melanie where she meets her admirer Rhett
once again.
The two central characters in the film that are outstanding are Scarlett and Ashley. They
both have portrayed their characters without holding back. Scarlett does not care what Ashley
will think of her for telling him how she feels about him(Fleming, Cukor and Wood). On the
other hand Ashley does not hesitate to reject her without considering that it would hurt her
feelings. He is honest with her and tells her that they are different and can never be together and
in the long run he marries Melanie as way of staying true to his word. They are both not afraid to
go for what they think is best for them and they are very confident in the decisions they make.
These two characters get along well and they help each other out. When Ashley is away,
he makes Scarlett promise that she will take care of his wife Melanie. They are loyal to each
other and Scarlett even helps Melanie deliver her baby in Ashley’s absence.
Music was one of the film techniques used in key scenes to help enhance the film
maker’s message. A key scene where music was used was where Rhett asked Scarlett to dance
with him and she agreed considering that it was long since she danced from the time when she
lost her husband.Another technique is the setting like where Scarlett expresses her feelings
towards Ashley.
To sum it all, honesty is a great virtue because it helps people not to break others hearts
and still be good friends. Even though Scarlett was madly in love with Ashley she later accepted
the fact that she could never have him for a husband. They remained friends even after their
