COMMUNITY ASSET MAPPING 2
Asset mapping is basically a tool that can be used to develop a community from the inside out by
a means of identifying and mobilizing community assets. Instead of focusing on the community
problem to be fixed within a community and trying to address such problems entirely with
external skills and funding, Asset mapping focuses on identifying individuals, groups and
institutions within a community that may play key roles in growing a community social and
economic well-being. In doing this, the community agencies are incorporated into partnership
with other development agencies who seek to strengthen the influence of community assets. The
community agencies may be local leaders, community, local community business leaders and
even lobby groups that may exist within the community to bring a productive change within the
community (Griffin & Farris, 2010). They also assist in sustainable development of such
community assets to ensure their increased efficiency within which communities can utilize them
to enrich their goals. Utilization of community assets empowers the community actors to even
strive more for the sustainability of the community and may empower them to begin addressing
new community challenges and develop new community assets at the same time improving on
the existing ones.

sustainability since it seeks to uncover and expand the community knowledge and skills. Asset
mapping encourages the community sustainability through the strengthening the community
based assets as well as the existing networks within the community in regards to community
actors and the general community (Griffin & Farris, 2010).
