1 Corinthians - Chapter 12:1-3 (Week 15-16) Leader Guide
Continued from Last Week on Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit
The Father and Son protect Him something fierce (Matt 12:31-32, Luke 12:10) Note how John
still teaches this principle decades later these are believers that sin. (1 John 5:16-17)
There are two times Jesus says that you will not be forgiven for something you do:
1. Mat 6:9-15
2. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?
Mat 12:22-32, - The story (Mark 3:30 adds additional clarification)
See Acts 5:1-10 for a story of believers killed by God
See also the following about the potential of losing salvation: Heb 6:4-6, 10:26ff
Hebrews 10:26-31, 2 Peter 2:20, 1 Corinthians 6:9, Gal 5:19, Mat 7:21,
Revelation 3:5
o interpretation
it is the person that never believes in Jesus and thus dies in unbelief
(http://www.gotquestions.org/blasphemy-Holy-Spirit.html)
This only applies to Jesus work through the Holy Spirit and can not be applied
today (c.f. 1 John 5:16-17) If this is the case, then John’s comments make no
sense.
This is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit plain and simple, done with
understanding and a heart free of guilt and unrepentance.
o Many have grieved the Holy Spirit, which involves resisting him, but few have actually
blasphemed him, which involved attributing his work to the devil, hating the work he
does through believers, etc.
o A non-believer cannot blaspheme a person they do not even know. One author states,
Blasphemy against the Spirit is the absolute, permanent, hateful rejection of the
[ministry] of the Holy Spirit with the motive to keep others from fully following Christ as
well as to keep one's position of power. A person who has committed this sin has no
desire for repentance, will divide the body of Christ, judge the salvation of others, and
will ultimately die in this state. [] mine
o How does all this relate within the framework of scriptures like: 1 John 1:9; Rom 8:39
There is a balance of understanding that if you are in Christ, you are in the Love
of God. The word “Nothing” doesn’t mean you can’t walk away (John 6:64-69
