APPLICATION OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY 2
Applications of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
Introduction
Cognitive psychology is one of the areas in psychology that tries to explain human
behavior through evaluating their thought processes (Beck, 2011). It assumes that people are
logical and tend to make choices that make sense to them. The process of processing information
is used to describe how different outcomes arise, and it is used to compare the human mind to the
working of a computer. Three main theories contribute to cognitive psychology including
rational emotive behavior theory, cognitive theory, and behavior theory (Beck, 2011).
Cognitive theory bases on the fact that learning arises from one's experiences, memory,
perceptions, and verbal thinking. It also looks at how the thought process influences one's
understanding and their interaction with the world around them that is why children think
differently than adults do (Kendall, 2011). Behaviorist theory, on contrary to cognitive theories,
suggests that learning arises from good or bad experiences in one's life. It, however, does not
explain the intermediary or the thought process. The behaviorist theory reduces the complexity
of human behavior. The two have however been merged to form cognitive behavior theory.
Cognitive behavior theory falls under general categories of methods evolving from
theoretical writings, experiences and studies of different psychologists. Cognitive behavior,
theories are useful and most convenient ways of looking at human behavior compared to the
latter as they focus on both ways equally. Cognitive-behavioral theories base on different
observed changes and cognition with methodological strictness. They provide great flexibility in
the various clients and interventions of therapy. A conceptual model of the relationship between
feelings, thoughts and behaviors of behavior assessment in individuals provide a triple response
mode (Gentner, & Stevens, 2014)
