Performance evaluation is a vital component of any organization as it is used to gauge if
the employees are working towards the organizational goals or not. It helps to determine the
efficiency of the employees in meeting set objectives. One of the best practices in performance
evaluation system is to consider it system as an ongoing workplace event and not a one-time
occasion helping to make employee realize that each of their actions contributes to their
evaluation (Bruce, 2012). Another practice of performance evaluation is to train employees and
managers on giving negative and positive feedback on an ongoing basis, this means that
employees and the management will be are aware of their performance each day. Another good
practice involves open communication with employees about their performance and the
compensation system in the organization. Employees are aware of their performance rating and
how they will be compensated for their performance.
An improvement plan must have various elements; the first is the documentation of
performance issues, an action plan, review performance plan and follow-up. These aspects are
very important for various reasons documentation of performance issues allows the organization
to identify the major obstacles in its way (SHRM, 2013). An action plan helps to identify ways
of fixing the preference issues. Review of the performance plan helps the organization to seek
clarification on the strategies it aims to use from third parties such as the HR division. Follow-up
is an important aspect to check the progress of the improvement plan.
