Effects of Dementia
Dementia refers to an overall term that describes a varied array of signs and symptoms
that are connected with the reduction in memory or other reasoning skills that are severe enough
to limit a person’s ability or strength to carry out daily activities (McNamara, 2011). Therefore,
dementia is not a specific disease but a term that defines symptoms that are likely to affect the
thinking levels of an individual. Hence, dementia is known to affect learning aptitude and use of
information and retention. It is for this reason, therefore, that there are different ways that this
occurrence takes place. For example, dementia may lead to memory loss that affects daily life.
The primary effect of dementia is memory loss (Whalley & Breitner, 2009). Such memory loss
results in increasingly forgetting of important appointments that may result into overdependence
on memory aid or reminder notes so as to retrieve such information.
Secondly, dementia effects include disorganization and lack of planning or problem-
solving skills. The effects of Dementia may lead to an inability to cultivate and follow a plan or
work out numbers (Whalley & Breitner, 2009). The disorganization results from a lack of
concentration as a result of the condition. Additionally, dementia may result in difficulty
undertaking and completing a familiar task. For example, the effects may lead to many
employees having trouble allocating familiar places (McNamara, 2011). It is because of
dementia that they find it challenging to complete daily routines.
Patients suffering from dementia can easily lose track of seasons or dates (McNamara,
2011). For instance, many of the patients suffering from dementia may have difficulty
comprehending issues unless they are happening instantaneously. Lastly, the effects of dementia
may result in a lack of understanding of visual images, besides spatial relationships (Whalley &
Breitner, 2009). It occurs when one has problems in judging distance, naming colors and reading
