Is climatic change causing more floods and drought?
I chose this topic based on the current situation floods and droughts being experienced in
different countries across the globe and the ongoing news of El Nino rains that are expected to be
experienced in different regions around the world. The issue of floods has now become a topic of
concern as it threatens to become an issue of national disaster in the near future.

This article highlights the main concern of flooding that is attributable to climatic
changes. The article addresses how the devastating floods that has left many people homeless
may be a foreshadow of the extreme weather expected due to global warming. Climatologists
and U.N. officials have openly expressed that recent floods that have swept more than one-fifth
of Pakistan are directly linked to climatic changes. Scientists at the World Meteorological
Organization and World Climate Research Programme have said that the anomalies in the
atmosphere that contributed to the Pakistan floods relate directly to the same weather conditions
that led to mudslides and flooding in China and the record heat wave in Russia.
According to the scientists at WMO and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration together with other scientists, the world has experienced one of the hottest
summers ever in 2014 and the Central Asia, Europe and United States have broken the records
with having very high temperatures (Seager, Naik, & Vogel, 2012). In addition, reports from the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change show that higher temperatures on the oceans have
resulted to more water vapor in the atmosphere which has resulted to heavy rain falls. Many
