Human beings are special creatures, when in a group, there are those who are aggressive and
always want to be the leaders while there are those who like to be in the back seat and just watch
as others run a given place. Other people just prefer to have a good time and leave the leadership
burden to others who are willing to carry it. These different dimensions are similar to Hofstede’s
cultural dimension theory. This theory looks at special aspects of culture and compares them
carefully. Some people still wonder how this theory came about, it was Hofstede’s study on how
values in the workplace are influenced by culture. Hofstede is a Dutch organizational sociologist
who conducted a research on IBM and used the data to come up with his five dimensions of
culture. (Hofstede, 1988).
In this paper, we will start by a critique of the five dimensions of culture to help us understand
his reason and the point of view he had. The following are his arguments about the dimensions of
culture:
Small vs. large power distance
According to hofstede, this dimension refers to how our society deals with inequalities in day to
day activities for example in work places. In this case, he argues that all of us can’t be up there
and that means there are less powerful people in our society, organizations, and institutions.
These people tend to agree with the fact that power can’t be equal. This can be seen all over the
world, for example, we cannot all be CEOs of a given organization, there must be one person to
lead us and this dimension looks at it in the way in which we accept the inequality and work with
it. (Hofstede,2013).
Individualism vs. collectivism
In this one, he argues on two questions about how people prefer to work. These are; do they
prefer to work in groups and networks or do they prefer to be left alone to execute their daily
