The term education has been traditionally defined as the transfer of knowledge from one
person to another. Others have also defined education as the transfer of knowledge from the
senior citizens of the society to the younger citizens. Traditional education involves transferring
and sharing of knowledge from one party to the other party. This essay is going to explain the
different views about education and knowledge and the role education plays in the society (Kant,
2012).
First, although education is traditionally defined as the transfer of knowledge from one
party to the other, it does not necessarily mean that the senior citizens are the ones transferring
the knowledge and information to the younger citizens. This is because sometimes the young
people are the ones transferring the knowledge they have to the senior citizens. This is evident in
schools and colleges. The senior citizens nowadays attend colleges and other higher education
institutions like universities to pursue their dreams or further their education. There are young
professors and doctors who teach in these institutions and they are the ones who transfer the
knowledge they have to the students who comprises of the senior citizens. There have been some
cases in the third world countries like Africa where very old citizens as old as 80 years go back
to school to quench their hunger for education. Some years back, an old man from Africa was
recorded in the Guinness book of world record as the oldest student in the world (McMillan, &
Schumacher, 2014).
Secondly, knowledge has been traditionally viewed as the end rather than the means to an
end. It has been viewed that when an individual or a group of individuals undergo the education
system; at the end what they gain is the knowledge. This can be true because both the teachers
