WHY PRISONS SHOULD NOT BE PRIVATIZED 2
Why Prisons Should Not Privatized
Prisons should not be privatized, because punishing criminal activity should not be a for-
profit business. It should not be the prerogative of private businesses to administer punishment.
It is the State who decides whom to imprison, so it should remain responsible for prisoners until
they are rehabilitated. It is wrong to put a private company in charge of prison operations,
because its goal would be profit, rather than punishment or rehabilitation. Private prisons that cut
costs may provide poor conditions for rehabilitation, and are not an effective tool for reducing
prison populations.
Prison should not be privatized, because the profit can be made via improper treatment of
prisoners. Prisons are based on two things: custody and care. It is unlikely that a company will
cut corners on the custody aspects of imprisonment. Thus, care remains the part of the budget,

Thus, there will be less need for prisons. Privatized prisons are disastrous from the point of view
of reducing prison populations.
Finally, the most important reason prisons should not be privatized is that the right to
punish belongs to the State alone. Only the criminal justice system is can legally deprive human
