PATHOLOGY AND MENTAL 2
Culture is the customs, beliefs and way of life of a group of people who live in the same
area. Pathology is the study of where diseases come from, their causes, how they develop and the
results they bring to a person. Mental illness is the mental health conditions that can affect the
behavior, mood and thinking. One’s culture influences mental health and illnesses. The
characteristics of a group are shown by their appearances. There are differences in age, gender
and health status in a culture. Mental illness are would wide found. The culture symptoms appear
on some groups of people. The culture and social surroundings of a person make one to get
certain illness with the genes around (Zola, 2007).
One way culture affects this illness is the way they describe their symptoms. Cultures
describe their symptoms differently. Like the Asians, they say dizziness when they are
describing their emotions. The way that these cultures derive, their senses of stress and illness
vary. The meaning of illness can make one to be mentally ill. In some groups of people, an
illness is a curse from the gods (Mezzich, 2002). So when one becomes sick, they believe that
they are cursed. Most of them suffer mental illnesses and stress because they see that they are not
loved.
In many cultures when one does something that is not accepted by the society, one is to
face the consequences. Some of them are torture and being killed. After committing an offence,
someone will feel quilt and will suffer emotionally not knowing the consequence he or she will
get. This causes trauma that can eventually cause a mental illness because of the suffering. How
culture copes with different problems can resort to illnesses. Some American cultures believe in
facing a problem than avoiding it. This makes the people of these cultures avoid stress and
emotional problems thus being illness free (Zola, 2007).
