Microphone positioning: vocals
There are different microphones that have different polar patterns. These could be
utilized in recording techniques in vocals. For instance, in a vocal ensemble, an omnidirectional
mic is essential as vocalists can circle around it to ensure that singers will blend their voices.
Also, in cases where a singer wants to try singing in the comfort of their house, an
omnidirectional mic captures the house sound and the direct voice of the singer. The house,
however, must have an ambience and a reverb that adds the desired effect on the voice.
It is noted that the distance between the vocalist and the mic is an important
consideration. When the distance is small, the sound is picked directly. Nonetheless, the vocalist
needs to be isolated and utilize the unidirectional mic. An example of isolating the vocalist is
where an effort could be made to ensure that any reflections are minimized. Since the music
stand could lead to reflecting back the sound, adjustment of the microphone to point directly to
the mouth is essential in order to ensure the complete capture of the voice of the vocalist.
However, there should be a slight off-axis placement to limit the any sounds from breath blasts.
There are instances where singers do not want to record in an isolated environment. In
this case, the singer is forced to sing louder and ensure that they push their voices to listen to
themselves. A loud environment is a difficult context in recreating with headphones. The singer
should be advised to sing in a control room especially for the purpose of convenience. A
supercardioid dynamic microphone is used in the control room plus studio monitors. The
supercardioid mic is utilized in rejecting explosive sounds that are projected from the speakers.
