Introduction
Leadership is defined as the act of asking someone else to do something that should be
done. It comprises the act of exhibiting authority and power over others. Communication on the
other hand, is defined as the process of passing information from one individual to another.
Communication can take place on professional level, educational level and personal level among
others. It plays an important role in any organization because it enables both employees and the
management to convey and receive information. There are three main types of communication in
an organization; upward, downwards and horizontal communication. Downward communication
is a type of communication that involves passing information from the senior level to the junior
level. Upward communication is the type of communication that involves passing of information
from the junior level to the senior level and horizontal communication involves transfer of
information between two or more departments that are on the same level (Yukl, 2012).
Leaders are one of the top most ranked employees in the management position within the
organization. They are the people who ensure that the organization achieves its goals and
objectives. Organization leaders provide the sense of direction in the organization and ensure that
all the organization’s relevant stakeholders are considered as far as decision making process is
concerned. The stakeholders include; shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees, government
authority and the society at large.
Effective leaders are those leaders who are able to appropriately and effectively manage
their team without much resistance. They are the leaders who consider all the suggestions and
opinions from their team members before making any decisions that might affect them. Effective
