PIAGET’S THEORY
This is a theory that explains the nature and development of human intelligence. Piaget believed
that the intelligence could be linked to ones childhood.
STRENGTHES OF PAGIET’S THEORY
He was able to focus on two variables which were relationship between mental maturation and
environmental experience.
His theory was based on simple things that people could to themselves, in the early periods many
parents adapted the provision of a good environment for their children
He was able to define clearly the hypothesis behind his theory which primarily was about
development and maturation of the human brain.
CRITICISM OF THE THEORY
The theory is domain general in which he stated that knowledge occurs across different domains
in which he did not consideration that different children can differ in sophistication across
different domains.
Later on in late 90’s cognitive developmental theory was influenced with new ideas resulting
from the thought of domain general to domain specificity
The new ideas were in contrast with piaget’s theory of domain general in which they stated that
children are born with a core intelligence which enable them to break through deferent domain
(Domain specific theory)
The theory is said to have not put into account other issues that might affect a child’s cognitive
development’
CONTRIBUTIONS OF VYGOTSKY
Vygotsky came up with the concept of Zone of Proximal Development which explains that how
one acquires new knowledge is based on previous and repeated learning of the student and a set
of instruction.
He was a pioneer psychologist in which his key areas were
1. Developmental psychology
2. Child development
3. Education

COGNITIVE CHANGES THAT OCCUR DURING INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD
The processing perspective views the human mind as a system that processes information
according to the set of rules it’s given
Children not only grow physically in the first 2 years but also cognitively explained as mentally,
as they grow and establish themselves in their environment they develop new pathways within
their brain and also brain and the body
It easy to measure the physical development but or cognitive a child is carefully observed using
the tools developed by theorist.
According to Piaget’s theory cognitive development is through stages namely
Reflexive stage
This is from infancy to about 1month the reflexes include sucking a bottle when given
milk
Children don’t think about the reflex they act on them automatically
Primary circular reaction stage
1-4 months the children do things that soothe them, this also where the child learns about
trust and mistrust in their environment.
When they feel hungry or unsatisfied they expect their
The processing of this information is based on sensory trigger which allows information to be
stored, short term and long term memory.
