Generally, Psychology is an academic discipline inclined on studying and understanding the
mind and the associated individual’s or group’s behavior. Social Psychology, a branch of
psychology, is thus bent on understanding the social aspect of human mind and behavior. It
involves an individual’s or the collective thinking of a group and how people influence and relate
to each other. Social encounters and relationships are influenced by several factors,
simultaneously, like moods, attitudes, stress and culture among others. Employment of scientific
data collection techniques, analyzation of the results and formulation and testing of theories
helps in development of general principles of human behavior.
Attitude, both implicit and explicit, is an intrapersonal phenomena that defines humans’ tendency
to evaluate others, objects or places. Gestalt, a psychologist, argued that the whole is greater than
the summation of parts. In essence, he meant that perception plays a great role in determining
people’s attitudes and behaviors, and as a result their social interactions. Evidently, racism has
greatly declined across the world, but still people show implicit discrimination against other
races due to the unconscious attitude towards that particular race.
Strongest attitudes are genetically defined. However, people can be persuaded to adopt certain
attitudes or behaviors. The effectiveness of the persuasion depends on how appealing the
communicator, the message and the medium is to the audience. It can result in long lasting
change or short lasting change, in thinking and behavior, depending on the respective motivation
input. In addition, social cognition majorly deals with people’ interaction with other and how
they perceive and think about the others. This can be termed as social behavior, and is affected
by several factors like personality, character and other factors like environment.
On interpersonal level, a person’s thinking and behavior can be influenced by another or a group.
And this implies that people have a certain persuasive capability on others feelings and thoughts.
