High rates of 100% in utilization of central processing unit (CPU) and the computer’s
memory disk indicate large number of ongoing processes currently running in a computer. The
computer user may have too many different windows and processers open that may be slowing
the machine. Other possibilities include background processes of the computer, not actually
triggered by the user and in worse case scenarios viruses and other malware might be running
processes that may actually cause the slowness. To get the real reasons for the slowness, the
following questions can be posed to the user:
1. How many different processes or windows do you have currently open?
2. Have you connected to the Internet or used a shared memory device?
3. Are you aware of any background programs or processes running in the computer?
The responses from the computer user can be confirmed by using tools such as the Task
Manager and Computer Anti-virus to establish the true state of the computer. The Task Manager
displays all the current running processes and programs and the amount of central processing
unit (CPU) they are utilizing. The computer user can stop heavy processes and unwanted
processes by highlighting the specific processes and clicking the end now button on the Task
Manager. Similarly, the computer user can scan the computer using the Computer Anti-virus, to
identify possibilities of infection with viruses and malware which can be consequently be
cleaned or deleted. To limit unwarranted running background programs, the computer can
disable or remove startup programs. Finally, a reboot is necessary to ensure all the new changes
have been implemented.
