Open source operating system is not much old concepts in technology but rather has
become a common and popular among technologists and users across the world and in
businesses. In fact, open source is simply termed as a free software that the developers have
offered for use freely. The source code for the software is publically available and can be used
without the need of publishing the license. There is a number of open source software being used
in the businesses today. One of them is the GNU/Linux operating system and Android operating
systems which are becoming popular among PC and mobile devices users.
The open source operating system is characterized by several advantages and
disadvantages. Among the advantages is that the operating system is freely available thus saving
business a considerable amount of money and other resources. With the open source software,
there is freedom of using the operating system of choice rather than keep confined under a single
operating system meaning that one will be flexible (Shelly, Vermaat, Course Technology and
Cengage Learning, 2012). One can be able to modify and adjust the system in a way that it fits
the business requirement which cannot be done with the proprietary operating systems. It is
easily modifiable by developers meaning it is dynamic in real time. This means that the user is
open to high quality and security.
However, there are also disadvantages associated with the open source operating system.
The open source can lender the market for the commercial product to be of no use. They will
evolve more according to the developers that it may meet the desires of the end user in the
market. Open source system relies much on the users to make the necessary changes on a
problem being experienced. There is also some other hidden cost for the software especially for
paying external support for the system.
