Looking at Sinui Pai Nanek Sengik Community Education Programs Rethinking Helping Others Help Themselves Introduction Sinui Pai Nanek Sengik (SPNS), New Life One Heart, is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia. Founded in 1995 after a decade of grassroots work in Orang Asli villages in Perak, SPNS run community education programs to mobilize communities for political and social action. They focus on encouraging Orang Asli communities to gain critical thinking skills and the confidence to speak up in the public arena in order to analyze Orang Asli problems and find solutions to overcome these problems. Among their initiatives are literacy programs, economic projects, human rights and legal workshops and community learning centers. Background A heterogeneous Malay term, first used by Malaya’s British colonists during the Emergency (1948-1960), Orang Asli, to refers to at least 18 culturally and linguistically distinct ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia. Scholars translate this term to mean the ‘aboriginal people’ as well as the ‘original people’ (literal translation) as most Orang Asli descend from Pre-Islamic and Pre-Malay inhabitants of the region.
